COMING  SOON

People often ask me what I find beautiful. They expect me to speak of paintings, cathedrals, music, sunsets, beautiful women, old books, fine wine. They are always surprised when I answer: Attention.

Attention is the most beautiful thing in the world, because wherever true attention is given, beauty begins to reveal itself. Beauty is not something added to reality. It is what remains when distraction disappears. A rose is not beautiful because it is a rose, It is beautiful because, for one brief moment, someone truly sees it. The same is true of a weathered hand. An abandoned church, A cracked teacup. The silence between two old friends. Even sorrow, when understood, possesses an extraordinary beauty. Not because suffering is desirable, but because truth is always beautiful. Beauty is one of God's oldest languages. It speaks without words. It convinces without argument. It transforms without force. That is why no civilisation has ever survived without beauty. When beauty disappears, refinement disappears. When refinement disappears, gratitude follows. Then dignity. Then civilisation itself.

People imagine beauty belongs to museums. I tell you it belongs to breakfast. To polishing your shoes. To writing a thoughtful letter. To setting a table with care, even when you dine alone. To speaking gently when anger would be easier. Beauty is a discipline before it is an aesthetic. Many decorate their homes while neglecting their character. I have always preferred the opposite. The most magnificent room cannot compensate for an untidy soul. A beautiful life is always greater than a beautiful house.

Beauty is not luxury. Luxury without beauty becomes excess. Beauty without wealth remains beautiful. That is why a monastery can be as magnificent as a palace. One possesses gold. The other possesses presence. Do not mistake novelty for beauty. Fashion changes because it fears time. Beauty survives because it belongs to eternity. The Parthenon. A Gothic cathedral. A Japanese tea bowl. The smile of an old woman who has forgiven life. They speak the same language. Not style. Truth. I have painted for many years. People sometimes ask how I know when a painting is finished.

I tell them: 'When it becomes quieter than I am.' That is beauty. Not noise demanding attention. Silence worthy of attention. Perhaps that is why I no longer chase beauty. I cultivate the conditions in which beauty feels welcome. Patience. Care. Wonder. Humility. Then beauty arrives on its own. Like a bird that lands only where it feels safe. If there is one thing I wish for you, it is not that your life becomes easier. It is that your eyes become clearer. For once you truly learn to see, the whole world begins introducing itself again.
