DRACULA ON ETERNITY
Fragments from Dracula’s Journal
Eternity is not an endless quantity of time. It is what remains when time is no longer mistaken for reality. People imagine eternity as an infinite corridor: one century opening into another, one lifetime followed by countless others, a road without conclusion. That is not eternity. That is merely time refusing to die.
Time is Eternity’s favourite toy. It stretches itself into empires, compresses itself into kisses, disappears during beauty and becomes unbearable during pain. It convinces kings that they possess history and children that an afternoon will never end. Then it gathers every crown, every wound, every name and every carefully defended certainty into the same invisible hand.
Time plays. Eternity observes.
I have lived long enough to understand that duration is not immortality. A stone may endure longer than a man, yet know nothing of eternity. A man may live for a single instant in complete presence and touch something the stone will never know.
Longevity is accumulation. Eternity is recognition.
There are moments in which the machinery of the world becomes silent. The past does not pursue you. The future does not call. The name you were given loosens its grip, and for one immeasurable instant you are not becoming anything. You simply are. That is the opening. That is the door through which eternity enters the room.
Most people do not fear death, they fear the collapse of the person they have spent a lifetime constructing. The titles, the memories, the injuries polished into identity, the reflection they taught others to recognise. Death does not threaten life, it threatens the story one has mistaken for life.
Perhaps death is not the opposite of eternity. Perhaps death is the servant standing at its threshold, removing from each visitor everything that cannot pass through. The body is returned, the possessions are returned the reputation is returned, the name itself is returned, only what is real may continue. This is why men fear the gatekeeper, they suspect how little of them will survive the inspection.
I have watched generations attempt to defeat time by leaving monuments behind. Portraits, buildings, children, fortunes, books, institutions. They call this legacy, but legacy is not the preservation of the self, it is the release of something into the world that no longer requires the self to remain alive. The true creator does not build a monument to his existence, he builds a doorway through which existence may continue creating.
Eternity cannot be possessed. The moment one says my eternity, one has reduced the infinite to property. Eternity belongs to no man, no church, no kingdom and no god invented in the image of a frightened ruler. It is not a reward distributed after death, it is the ground beneath birth and death alike.
Every moment is eternal until the mind divides it. Before, after, too soon, too late. The mind cuts the indivisible into pieces and then mourns the fragments. It calls one piece memory and another anticipation. It calls the narrow wound between them the present, but eternity was never divided, only our attention was.
The awakened do not escape time, they cease to be imprisoned by it, they still arrive, they still depart, they still watch the seasons alter the garden and the mirror alter the face, but beneath each change they recognise the unchanging witness, the one who was present in childhood, the one who is present now, the one who has never grown older.
I once believed that eternity would reveal itself at the end of the world. I searched for it in tombs, cathedrals, bloodlines, stars and ancient pages written by men who claimed to remember the beginning. I was wrong. Eternity was concealed in the smallest possible place. Here, not after the final breath, not beyond the last horizon, HERE, before thought gives the moment a name.
Love is one of the few experiences through which ordinary people willingly enter eternity. For an instant, the borders of the Self become uncertain, another life is felt from within, time loses authority, and separation weakens. This is why love terrifies those who worship control. It offers them immortality, but only on the condition that the person demanding immortality disappears.
Beauty also interrupts time. One stands before a painting, a face, a building, a shaft of evening light and something ancient looks through the eyes. Beauty does not make the moment last forever, it reveals that the moment was never temporary.
To remember eternity is not to become indifferent to life, it is to become intimate with it. The eternal does not diminish the value of a single hour, it makes the hour immeasurable.
Men ask whether the soul lives forever. The question is backwards. The soul does not live forever, FOREVER lives through the soul.
There is only one moment in which awakening can occur, not yesterday, not tomorrow, not in the promised life waiting beyond this one. NOW. The eternal does not arrive, it is what remains when arrival and departure are seen as movements within it.
Do not ask how much time you have left. Ask how much of the time already given to you has truly been inhabited. A thousand distracted years contain less life than one completely conscious breath.
Eternity is not waiting for us. Eternity is NOW!
